Local Beaches

Wonwell Beach - approx 20 minute drive

Wonwell beach is a private beach owned by The Flete Estate, however, it is open to the public all year round. Situated on the east side of the Erme Estuary there is limited parking.  The beach is very popular with dog owners. The beach features a numbers of coves which are surrounded by woodland.

Mothercombe Beach

Mothercombe Beach - approx 20 minute drive

​Mothercombe beach is a private beach owned by The Flete Estate, however, it is open to the public all year round. The beach is accessed via a footpath from the beach carpark approx 1/4 of a mile. The waters are ideal for windsurfing, kitesurfing, bodyboarding and paddle boarding.

Note: Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 1st May to 30th September.

Bigbury Beach

Bigbury-on-sea - approx 25 minute drive.

​Bigbury has a small sandy beach at high tide but low tide there is an expanse of golden sands and you can walk across to Burgh Island (pictured left). You can also cross on the sea tractor if the tide is in. (Tide Times) There are plenty of water sports such as surfing, kayaking, windsurfing, kite surfing, bodyboarding and paddle boarding available. Lifeguards operate on this beach between May & September. You can pay for parking using mobile apps but mobile & local wi-fi signals are poor. It is advisable to take some coins with you as this is often quicker.

Note: Dogs are not permitted on the main beach between 1st May and 30th September but are allowed on the far eastern side all year.

Bantham Beach

Bantham Beach - approx 30 minute drive

​Bantham Beach is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The sandy beach and shallow water make it ideal for families. It's one of the best surfing beaches in Devon.

(Tide Times) There are plenty of water sports such as surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding available. Lifeguards operate on this beach between April & September. Please use the link above to Bantham Beach and check the car park charges as visitors do feel these are expensive.

Note: Dogs are not permitted on the main beach between 1st May and 30th September but are allowed on the beach beside the estuary all year round.

Of course the travel times are approximate and will be dependant on traffic conditions at the time of travel. Click on each picture to get directions to the beach via Google maps. It is advisable to head for the beaches early, particularly in the summer months, to avoid travel congestion and to get a parking space.
